About
BLACKBOX NOLA is an experimental theater company and performance lab based in New Orleans. We operate inside a 16-foot low-boy professional wrestling ring.
We believe the body knows before the mind does. We train actors from the body outward. We make theater that is physical, visible from all sides, and honest.
New Orleans already has the culture. We are not importing a tradition. We are building a container for what is already here.
Manifesto
Why the Ring
A proscenium theater tells the audience where to look. A black box gives you freedom you do not always earn. The ring gives you structure you cannot ignore.
The ropes are real. The corners are real. The floor has give. You feel the other person's weight when they move. You cannot hide.
The Lineage
This is Grotowski's Poor Theatre filtered through Southern humidity and a wrestling ring. Strip away set design. Strip away lighting tricks. Strip away elaborate production. What remains is the actor and the spectator.
What We Believe
The body knows before the mind does. Train the body first.
Specificity is not a luxury. It is the baseline. Vague work is lazy work.
Community is not an audience development strategy. Community is the reason the building stays open.
The smallest version that works is better than the perfect version that does not exist.
The Rule
If it does not serve training, community, or performance, we do not build it.
